Freepont Commodities, a merchant trading firm formed last year by the founders of Sempra Energy Trading, has hired David Gant as a gas trader in London.
Gant joined Freepoint yesterday to trade the U.K. and continental European gas markets, SparkSpread has learned.
He previously spent five years trading gas at Sempra Energy Europe and before that was a gas trader at BP.
Freepoint’s European power, gas, coal and emissions desks are led by Michael Walter.
Gant is one of several senior hires at Freepoint in recent months.
Earlier this month, Alex Claude joined from Vattenfall Energy Trading as head of coal in London.
Other recent hires include Daniel Mulder, a carbon trader; Friederike Brandt, head of European operations; Renata Frankova, director and head of central and eastern European power trading; Thomas Nilsson, head of Nordic power trading; and Monika Halasa, responsible for short-term power trading and scheduling.
